COACH LUKE TOWN
Owner / Player Development. Coach Town is the heart and soul of AFA. A former collegiate pitcher with 30+ years experience coaching 5 year old athletes all the way to high school, college and professional athletes. His ability to teach fundamentals and advanced details of the game in a transformation format is unique and unprecedented. As a Transformational coach, he is very passionate about breaking the mold of traditional coaching styles in order for athletes to excel with confidence and self-disciplined. Coach Town has been studying the biomechanics of baseball, specifically in throwing since 2000. As a throwing coach, there are few more knowledgeable in injury prevention, pre-hab/re-hab, and creating velocity.
COACH BRYAN DICKERSON
AFA Director/Recruiting Coordinator / Hitting / Slapping / 1B. Coach Dickerson believes in being a lifelong learner and has a deep love for the game of softball (often telling the baseball boys their sport is a piece of cake compared to softball). A former 2-sport Division II athlete at Northwest Missouri State University, Coach Dickerson is a National Fastpitch Coaches College (NFCC) Endorsed Hitting & Slapping Instructor and 1-star master coach. During our winter training program he runs 1B training for both our fastpitch and baseball athletes and middle infield training for fastpitch along with Coach Town. He also serves as our director of fastpitch and recruiting coordinator for all of our softball athletes. His coaching philosophy is that every mistake has value if you have the humility to learn from it and that there is always work to be done in this game.
COACH LARRY HAWKS
Pitching / Hitting / Catching / Infield Instructor. Coach Hawks has maintained a lifelong love of baseball and softball. He played collegiately at Central Missouri University (CMU) where he was a two-time All-American position player while also being named the conference Pitcher of the Year serving as the team’s closer. Those teams played in two College World Series. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres after his junior year and played three seasons of professional baseball, ultimately playing at the AAA level. Coach Hawks was fortunate to have played professionally for three future Major League managers, each of whom were tremendous teachers of the game. He coached hitting, catcher instruction and infield fundamentals at CMU while also serving as the 3rd base coach after his playing career ended. Coach Hawks was later elected to the Mules Baseball Diamond Club Hall of Fame. His coaching philosophy centers around maximizing each players unique athletic abilities while building confidence through challenging, yet attainable drills. Coach Hawks firmly believes the self-confidence derived from the hard work and attention to detail necessary to become a great player will apply throughout the athlete’s lives.
COACH PHIL THOMPSON
Hitting / Outfield Instructor. Coach Thompson has years of experience playing Independent League baseball with teams all over the country. He also had a successful college career at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo California. He has extensive coaching experience with the collegiate team The San Diego Wave and 5 years Coaching at The University of Kansas. He also has years of experience coaching youth and high school age athletes. Coach Thompson brings a very high energy, caring and extremely knowledgeable and detailed aspect to hitting and fielding to the program. Players in the program love him and have shown dramatic improvement at the plate and in outfield play.
COACH Chris Cooper
Catching Instructor. A former professional and college catcher, Coach Cooper has spent years researching and improving techniques to train better catchers. He has a rich history of success with players from not only this program, but other athletes around the area. Coach Cooper is a constant student of the game and he has a gift for improving catchers pop time, receiving, blocking and teaching our catchers how to call a game.
COACH ALI ALLEN-SCRUGGS
Mental Performance Specialist / Hitting /Outfield Instructor. Coach Ali empowers athletes to perform at their best on a consistent basis by optimizing critical mental skills, like confidence, motivation, energy management, attention control, goal setting, and imagery. Her coaching philosophy centers around physically, psychologically, socially and morally training athletes for future success in sport and life. She believes coaches are the designers and deliverers of the sport experience; therefore, she is invested in promoting a positive atmosphere for individuals and teams to both thrive and pursue excellence. With Coach Ali, individual and cultural differences are accepted, embraced, and viewed as elements of strength. She wants to “win athletes with sport”, not “win sport with athletes”. Coach Ali completed her doctorate in Sport and Performance Psychology in 2019; she is excited to teach individuals, teams, coaches, and parents how to optimize performance. A small speedy left-handed hitter/bunter/slapper and outfielder, Coach Ali played for Avila University for two years before playing her final two years at Pittsburg State University.
